About Michaela Bain

THE WHO

The wise Mushu from Mulan once said “Who am I? WHO am I??”, but unfortunately, I am not the guardian of the lost souls… or am I ? Aside from living vicariously through childhood movie quotes, I’m just a millennial girl living in a lonely world. If you’re looking to take the midnight train to anywhere, why travel alone? Through failed dating experiences, burn book potential friends, and one too many late night phone calls to mom, I’ve learned that an unbiased, open ear can truly make a difference. As humans, sometimes we feel as if we’re stuck inside a family board game favorite, The Game of Life. Our opponents are our high school crushes, family members, middle school coaches, colleagues at work and that one shady friend we just can’t say no to. At the end of game night, we’re all just hoping to move from one square space to another without throwing down the cards. When it comes to opponents, all I want is to be on your team and support you until the game is over.

THE WHAT

What’s my story you may ask? Well, without spilling all the beans… During my first semester of college, I unfortunately came to realize that I was in the wrong place at the right time. I originally went to college as a Kinesiology major. Growing up with a love for sports and being a wannabe athlete, I thought becoming an athletic trainer at a 5A high school was the dream. Little did I know towards the end of my first semester, I would find myself failing majority of my classes, including basic human anatomy. Despite my lack of attendance in class and over achievement in the full college experience, the only class I was passing happened to be general psychology. With encouragement and support from family, professors and my own therapist, I made the decision to pursue a career in helping others in a different way than I originally planned. Although I loved exploring the vast and ever-changing human body, it was though the windows into the soul and psyche instead of bandages on muscle spasms and broken bones, that I found my passion.

AND THE WHY

Why would someone want to be a client of mine? All jokes and puns aside, this is a question I continuously ask myself. I often find myself stopping to take a moment to evaluate, re-evaluate, and make changes in my personal and professional behavior, not only for others but for myself. I try to be the most genuine version of myself when it comes to working with clients. With that being said, a huge square space in developing my genuine self was admitting that I am an ever-evolving human being, with unlimited room for growth. The only limitations to growth are the limits we’ve made for ourselves, through each of our unique and individual experiences. I too have been the person laying on the couch, tissues in my hand, due to my own moves I’ve made in The Game of Life. I have felt the pressure from my opponents, even with little to no cheer leaders on the sidelines. Although I decided not to follow the medical route, I still wish to be a trainer, only one who lifts client’s up after a loss, instead. I hope to help teach others to bandage their own knee after a hard fall. I hope to show others what it feels like to wipe the sweat after their heads after an intense work out. At the end of the game, when the hard work is through, I want you to be able to see strength you’ve had all along.

THE FUN STUFF

Now to lighten the mood! Something about me, that my professional headshot may not tell you, is that I would domesticate a wild armadillo if I had the chance. I taught myself how to silversmith during the pandemic simply by watching YouTube videos. Thanks to the Youniversity of the Tube, jewelry making is one of my most practiced self-care regiments, along with creating works of art and crocheting. I’m a Sagittarius, since that matters nowadays. I have a dog named Shiner Bark, like the Shiner Bock beer.. but cooler. My dream dinner guest would be John Wayne Gacy, as I am true aficionado of true crime. If you saw me on the street one day, I might look as if I’m on my way to the local rodeo. On other days, I could be dressed like a manager at your nearest Hot Topic. All of this to say, I am just another human with human problems and random human quirks, just like you.

THE NITTY GRITTY

If you’re looking for the part of my spiel with all the juicy details that my resume has to offer, this is the paragraph for you. I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2017 and my Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2020. I received both of my degrees from Tarleton State University, in Stephenville, Texas, otherwise known as the cowboy capital of the world. In the past, I’ve provided individual and group sessions to female probationers with drug and alcohol offences. I have also worked with adults, adolescents and young children at a domestic violence agency, where additionally I facilitated educational groups for parents. While working with children, I have been able to accumulate hours to meet the requirements to become a registered play therapist, so that I may soon add more credentials to my arsenal.
